Volunteer as a Referee

Get Trained! Get Your Certification! Get Your Game On!

**** Read this carefully. Avoid Frustration. Complete all steps. ****

To become a referee, you must be at least 12 years and complete the following steps.

  1. Everyone - Complete current year volunteer form - where? Look at the top right hand corner of this Web Page (Register (if new) or Login and renew) - do this first and EARLY. Part of the process is a background check (youth referees are not background checked) and it takes time.
  2. Everyone  - Complete online classes
  3. If new or upgrading (to regional referee or higher) complete the In Person training.
    1.  You must have submitted your volunteer form to do the in-person training
    2. For Regional Referee - you must complete the online Regional Course before in-person training
  4. Everyone - Register on CGI so you can sign up for games - in addition to the above - prior to being approved to do games you must have current certifications in all three safe haven courses. These courses must be recertified every 2 years - they are all done online.
      1. Safe Haven
      2. Concussion Awareness
      3. Sudden Cardiac Arrest
For your reference:
6U Referees are required to have at least an 8U Basic Referee Certification - it is an all online course. However, it is perfectly acceptable for them to have a more advanced certification. We highly recommend doing the 8U online certification as it is really particular to the younger players game.
7U, 8U, 10U Referees - Are required to have a Regional Referee Certification which is comprised of both an ONLINE and In-Person Companion course. These courses introduce more detailed referee concepts and cover situations involving fouls, goalkeepers and referee teaming.
12U and up require higher badge levels.

If you previously certified it doesn't expire. However: you must have a current year volunteer form and you must have completed your Safe Haven certifications within the last 2 years. EVEN IF your profile indicates "verified" the completed date must be within the last 2 years or you will not be able to sign up for games.

These steps are numbered for a reason. Do them in order. The safe haven classes can be done any time after you register your volunteer form. You can do all the training - GREAT! - but if the safe haven certifications aren't current and complete, you will not be cleared to sign up for games.

Step 1:
 COMPLETE YOUR VOLUNTEER FORM
- Go to www.ayso39.org and click the "Register Now" button in the upper right corner
- Either log in to your existing account or create a new account (you must have your own account
- Click on the "Volunteer Opportunities" tab, and fill out the form

Be sure to write down or note your AYSO ID where you can reference it later.

IMPORTANT -  No training can be taken if you have not completed step 1.

Step 2:  COMPLETE THE ONLINE CLASSES in AYSOU

Log in to https://aysou.org with your same credentials.  Click on “Online Courses” in the top red bar, or scroll down to “Online Courses” and click on “View your Enrolled Courses”. All referees whether new or upgrading take the following three online courses:

If you are a:
         * New 6U referee - Take the online  "8U Official Course" (yes 8U)
 * 7U, 8U or 10U - Take the online "Regional Referee Training".

Next, complete all 3 safe haven courses - you must re-certify every 2 years - If you cannot complete these before the in-person training that's fine, but you will not be able to sign up for games until they are completed:

Step 3: Complete the In-Person training

IMPORTANT - You must
have a completed volunteer form AND have completed the online portion of the training prior to attending. The instructor will not be able to add you to the roster and you will not get credit for the class if these two things are not completed.

Follow this link for a detailed guide to signing up for in-person training.
